Background Information

Revolution is a community outreach movement in the Jane & Finch community, located in North Toronto. Revolution is based out of Christian Centre Church, but does some of its outreach adventures outside of the building (i.e. area middle schools). We are deeply invested in seeing spiritual, physical, emotional and mental healing in as many folks as possible in our beloved community.

We grieve the national perception of our community. Since many of us live in the community, we see firsthand the realities that influence our community. The media has branded our home a place comparable to Southside Chicago, the Bronx or perhaps the no longer existent lower ninth ward of New Orleans. On the one hand, there is no question that our community is tough (by Canadian standards). It is a popular landing ground for new immigrants and there are an abundance of low income families (due to a concentration of subsidized housing). The result is that approximately 30% of our families live below the poverty line, and unfortunately our community is home to gang activity, occasional violent crime, poor education and high teen pregnancy rates.
On the other hand however, it carries a sense of community and vibrancy that few in the suburbs have ever experienced. There are people here from over 80 countries in the world. Revolution is here to embrace the good and revolutionize the rest. We are ready to serve the very neighbourhood that Toronto seeks to avoid. Please join us.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Seniors Outreach

We have an ongoing relationship with the Metro Toronto Housing Unit for seniors beside Christian Centre. We have done numerous banquets, barbeques and random visits over the last few years. We consistently visit folks and plan events. We would love for you to join us anytime. If you have a desire to be a friend to seniors with practical needs, you can contact us at any point and we can get you set up with some sweet friends.

Basketball HouseLeagues

This is our Unity Basketball Camp 2007 which included kids from across the corridor.

Within the realm of basketball, Revolution will run two basketball houseleagues from October 2008 until April 2009. As well, it will run two weeks of basketball camp in August 2009. Interested in volunteering? We need volunteers who both have basketball knowledge and do not. Please inquire if interested.

Grade 4 - 6 League

The first league will start October 2nd and end December 11th. The location will be Brookview Middle School. The time will be from 5:30 – 7:00 pm every Thursday night. The second league will go from January 15th – April 2nd.

Grade 7 – 8 League

The first league will also start October 2nd and end December 11th, will also be at Brookview Middle School, but will start at 7:00 and go until 9:00 pm every Thursday night. The second league will also go from January 15th – April 2nd.

Afterschool Program @ Christian Centre Church

This is a program that has been funded in the past by the government organization known as the ACCN, and has also been supported by the York University Faculty of Education. It has run for the past three years with an emphasis on improving academics. Education is not a strength in our community and we are working to address it while teaching our youth about the love of Jesus. A typical day volunteering would include playing games with the kids, supervising and leading computer activities, serving a snack and tutoring a child or two in the classroom. Our site at Christian Centre runs its program Tuesday through Thursday from 3-6 pm, but we are flexible with people showing up a little later. We merely desire consistency. This ministry is ideal for students at York University since the church is a stone’s throw from campus.

Mentorship Program

Everyone needs a mentor, even if you are 25…. Or even 50. The same is true for the many youth that we serve in the community. This is why our mentorship program is the most important area in which a volunteer can serve. However, in our experience, it is least supported area because it requires true love, patience and sacrifice.

Internship

Importance: it is very biblical for each disciple of Christ to, if possible, take an extended period of time to devote to ministry full time. Jesus called 12 random men to follow him for three years and it revolutionized their life!

You can join us for seven weeks either at the start of the summer or the end and allow this program to radically alter the way that you see the world. Note: Students are welcome to apply to both programs.

First Program:

Dates: To be Determined

Cost: $1000

Scholarships: 2 available for $250 each

Accommodation: Housing will be located for you in or near the community

Food: Interns & leaders eat all their meals together.

For the month of May, participants will work with our
seniors’ outreach effort, our downtown homeless ministry, and also with the Revolution Afterschool Program for middle school youth. As well, participants will spend considerable time in prayer, studying the bible, discipleship classes, communal meals and discussions surrounding books & films. The program’s discipleship classes will include sessions about other religions, apologetics, social justice issues, and how to both share and defend your faith. The schedule will remain quite similar in June. However, participants will be able to spend more time doing outreach: mentoring youth, having barbeques, going on day trips, visiting people etc.

Second Program:

Dates: To be Determinted

Cost: $1000

Scholarships: 2 available for $250 each

The second session description should be changed to say: For the month July, participants will again be heavily focused on prayer, bible study, the daily discipleship classes as well as communal meals and discussions. However, the outreach activities will change. Instead of afterschool program, participants will spend portions of their day visiting seniors, taking youth on day trips to the pool, and university students. In addition, those capable will
spend the last two weeks of the internship running basketball camps. The weekly visits downtown to hang out with the homeless community will also continue. Your vocation will be to be a full time lover of people.

"The internship with Christian Centre was honestly a life changing, eye opening experience. The whole summer was about learning, growing, sharing, serving, discipling others, being discipled, living simply and counter culturally, and loving others above and beyond, all in the name and in following the footsteps of Jesus Christ."

 - Jono Tao, 3rd Year at Wilfrid Laurier University
